Tourism in Campania: A €10 billion Industry

Every year, tourists who visit Italy cause the GDP to increase. One area in Italy that has seen significant growth is the Italian region of Campania.

Campania is one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations, boasting iconic coastal resorts, such as Capri, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. With such glorious Italy holiday destinations on offer, it is no surprise that Campania’s holiday market is booming!

A new study into Italy’s GDP has found that, on a national level, 47% of foreign-tourist spending goes on accommodation, 25% on catering and the rest on purchases and other types of expenses. But which region showed the strongest performance in the holiday market?

With Campania’s quality of Italian cuisine, the magical nearby islands and spectacular environment drawing tourists from across the globe, it is perhaps no surprise that this region accounts for a staggering 5.5% of the national economy.

As well as the holiday market, other categories that were measured as a part of this study into Italy’s GDP were each region’s cultural and artistic value. However, it wasn’t Campania that came out on top of this category, but the region of Lazio, where Rome can be found.

Business is booming in Campania!

Along with the northern Italian region of Trentino Alto Adige, Campania successfully earned €10 billion in tourism in 2017.

Last year, 38,175 companies were registered in Campania, with a total of 121,754 employees. These figures represented an increase in business growth in the Campania region.

However, business growth is nothing new to Campania. In 2015, this region experienced a business growth of 2.6% and an employee growth of 6.5%. And recent results indicate that the total number of companies has raised to 8%, with employee numbers increasing by a further 10.1%.

As you might imagine, the most thriving tourist areas of Campania are the Italian seaside resorts. The Amalfi Coast, the Cilento Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula were the top-ranking seaside resorts in Campania. The volume of tourism in these areas has turned these glorious coastal retreats into thriving economies, fuelled by the tourism industry.
